Making the decision to place a loved one in a nursing home is one of the hardest things you will ever do. My mother had dementia and putting her in a nursing facility was so very hard for all of us. She had a very active life and we watched her go downhill. In home health care did not work for Mom and she needed so much more.
Once Mom was settled in the nursing home I needed to be there constantly as her ADVOCATE. She lost the ability to speak for herself or tell nurses she was getting ill. Mom had COPD and a slight cold could be fatal. The nurses were loving and did the best they could but no one knew Mom like I did. I could tell a cold was coming on just by looking at her eyes and nose.
During Mom's tenure at the home (she is still there) I noticed so many people were lonely. Visitors came infrequently, if at all. Some were family sole survivors, others had out-of-town relatives, and many had children who worked at busy jobs leaving little time to visit. With each trip to the "home" I would always make it a point to speak to many of the residents who always appreciated a few minutes of my time. In addition to my Mom I also cared for my Aunt and Uncle who had no children.
